WILFRED OWEN AND THE SPIRIT OF BIRKENHEAD INSTITUTE

The imposing facade of the Birkenhead Institute was one of the most iconic to rise in the town during the Edwardian period. The embryonic talents of the young Wilfred Owen were nurtured there. Through its dark panelled corridors patrolled the stern form masters and eager prefects. Renowned for its sports, science and arts, it shaped the character of its pupils into outstanding ambassadors of a bygone age.

The original school was demolished in the 1980s but its proud edifice was preserved by one of its most timehonoured veterans. Art master David S W Jones created dozens of meticulous line drawings of his beloved Birkenhead Institute and these capture the true sense of time and place of the school’s fabled past.

At the Wilfred Owen Story and Gallery the public can view the most complete exhibition of these remarkable works that also depict other familiar Wirral landmarks. To coincide with this historic portfolio will be the unveiling of a specially commissioned ceramic replica of the Birkenhead Institute, created by Janet Holmes.

Taking her inspiration from David Jones' original sketches she has magically recaptured the spirit of the Birkenhead Institute; the cradle of Wilfred Owen’s genius.

I am looking to start ceramic workshops that I will be holding in the evneing or on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

At the exhibition at Atelier I will be offering a taster eseiin on Sunday 13th March 1.00pm - 3.00pm for anyone who would like to have ago.

I includied wall hangings at the exhibition. These are created by impressing natural objects into the clay or taking impressions with clay. This is the first exhibition were I displayed work on the walls as well as 3 dimentional pieces. 

I also held a demonstration day on the 4th February. This was very sucessful and enjoyable.

The exhibition will run from the 1st to 31st October 2010. 

The exhibition opens on Saturday 24 April and runs until Monday 31 May.

This is a beautiful arts centre that has three amazing exhibition spaces. I visited the centre earlier in the year and was struck by the atmosphere and relaxing mood there.

Castle Park Arts Centre is run as a charitable trust and is managed by volunteers.

I will be bring a new range of pieces entitle "Impressions of Nature". These will be an introduction to the course I will be hosting at Burton Manor in January.

I will be part of a group exhibition organised by Art & Design in the City. The exhibition runs from 12noon to 7.30pm at the Empire.

They are also at the View Two Gallery, Mathew Street, Liverpool. On different Saturday afternoons I will be creating a new piece at the gallery. This is a brilliant gallery, very relaxing. When you call in you are welcome to join us in a cup of tea.

I was at the Bluecoat earlier in July, along with other local artist who were also exhibiting their work. I did create a new piece on the day. The weather was very changeable but there was a lot of interest from everyone who came and the piece that I created has a very calm quality. A lovely place to work.
