Fired / Festive Fired
‘FIRED’ was an exhibition of distinctive and original pieces of sculptural ceramics by Janet. The show was unique in that visitors not only could view the collection but contributed to a new piece of art which is to be permanently displayed at Birkenhead Priory, Priory Street, Birkenhead. Wirral, Merseyside
The work on show in ‘FIRED’ celebrates the unique qualities of the clay and the individuality of the potter. Exposing the naked qualities of the clay is the essence of Janet’s work. Also discovering what is special about each of us and celebrating that. “We all have a part of us that we keep hidden” says Janet. “My work reflects that part of me. I feel we all need to take a chance and show who we really are and celebrate that.
All the work is hand crafted, many of which have been made by coiling the clay into different shapes. No two pieces are the same; incorporate sensual curves, soft form and contrasting textures.
This was Janet’s first solo exhibition and was held at Birkenhead Priory. “The venue is a perfect back drop for my work”, says Janet. “The atmosphere of quiet monastic reflection is an ideal setting for ‘FIRED’ allowing the focus to centre on the extremes and depth of the individual ”.
This exhibition looking away from commercialism and more towards individualism. What an exciting prospect, people embracing uniqueness and exploring it for themselves.
‘FIRED’ also included a very interactive work of art. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to put their own mark on pottery tiles which has be ‘FIRED’ and put together as a wall hanging. This was a unique opportunity to be involved in creating an original art work.
Birkenhead Priory Wall Hanging
The wall hanging that was created at the Fired exhibition is now on permanent display in the Refractory at Birkenhead Priory, Priory Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside.
I would like to thank all the people who contributed to the wall hanging. There is a grid next to the wall hanging in the Priory showing which tile was created by who. I have just listed everyone here in numerical order.
